The shortest words in our vocabulary are used at the highest rates. Rather than conveying content, these function words shape what the authors are saying by providing context, their relationship with the topic and the audience. Function words are profoundly social and psychological. Dozens of studies point to the ways that function words can reveal our personality, intelligence, honesty, status, and social connections with others. Implications of using text analysis methods to study people in real world settings are discussed.
