International students spent the summer again in the classrooms of the University of Hradec Králové

The fact that UHK is an attractive brand beyond the Czech Republic is confirmed by the annual interest of international students in summer schools offered by university components. Over a hundred students headed to Hradec Králové last year for summer study.

Czech language teaching focused on fine arts

From July 15 to August 15, the Faculty of Education at the University of Hradec Králové (PdF UHK) organized a summer school focused on teaching Czech in combination with visually oriented subjects. The summer school was attended by 16 students from the National Changhua University of Education in Taiwan.

The four-week program included:

  • Thirty-six lessons in Czech language and culture.
  • Four lessons in Czech and European music, including the active practice of Czech songs.
  • Fifty-six lessons in visually and graphically oriented subjects, including practical experimentation with traditional techniques in graphics, animation techniques, batik, handmade paper production, plein air, and art therapy.

Participants learned about several interesting places in the Czech Republic and became acquainted with the culture and history of our city and country. Together, they visited the Museum of Eastern Bohemia, the Gallery of Modern Art in Hradec Králové, the White Tower, Loučeň Castle, Kost Castle, and the International Barefoot Tourism Day.

summer school1Faculty of Informatics and Management's (FIM UHK) Czech It Out 2023 Summer School scores mainly with Asian students

On Saturday, July 8, registration and welcoming of international students who spent the entire month at FIM UHK took place. The Czech It Out 2023 Summer School was attended by 38 participants. The largest representation was from Taiwan, followed by South Korea, China, and Hong Kong. During their stay, they had the opportunity to attend lectures and workshops mainly focused on marketing, Intercultural Studies, and Business Communication. In addition to "local" teachers, representatives of various companies also gave lectures.

"Participating in this summer school was a great experience, and I learned much about the local culture. At the same time, I have always been interested in advertisement, but I did not have the opportunity to get closer to it. This school helped me find the direction in life I would like to pursue in the future," said Yujung from South Korea, who found a great interest in marketing.

Despite the unfavorable weather, visitors, accompanied by academics and students, made several trips around the area. They thus had the opportunity to learn about Czech attractions, natural monuments, and local institutions.

"This year's students were more prepared and linguistically equipped than in previous years. I think they were overall satisfied with the program content and the lectures. They probably appreciated the most the excursion to the Rakytník Cvrček company, followed by an Academic Talk with Dr. Tereza Otčenášková and the trip to Kutná Hora," said the primary coordinator of the summer school, Helena Holubičková.

summer school2Students at the Philosophical Faculty UHK also mastered the basics of Czech

The summer school at the Philosophical Faculty UHK was a challenge and a unique opportunity for 12 enthusiastic students from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the USA. Before the semester began, they had the chance to acquire basic knowledge of the Czech language during a two-week course, which was the main content of this summer school. Through 20 teaching blocks, participants were provided with a solid foundation for their upcoming studies in the Czech Republic.

Students also had the opportunity to explore the beauties of Hradec Králové ahead of other arriving students. Before the semester began, they could visit iconic places such as the White Tower and the Museum of Eastern Bohemia and get better acquainted with the city's atmosphere.

The outcome of this summer school was very pleasing – all students passed the final exam successfully and thus acquired adequate basics of the Czech language. This experience enriched their language skills and gave them valuable insight into Czech culture and history.

Natural sciences traditionally attract a lot of interest

From July 12 to August 12, 2023, the Faculty of Science UHK (PřF UHK) held a summer school, introducing four diverse programs: Geometry and Topology, Applied Biology, Cybernetic Systems, and Toxicology. The programs allowed students to deepen their knowledge and expand their perspectives in these specialized fields.

summer school3During their stay, students had a unique opportunity to engage in practical learning, which included a wide range of activities. They explored physical principles, conducted fieldwork in the Na Plachtě nature reserve, focusing on maintaining high biodiversity through targeted management. Additionally, they engaged in activities such as in-depth studies of summer phytoplankton in local ponds, anatomical dissections of animal hearts with functional lung tests, distillation of red wine, ecotoxicological biotests, and examination of spectroscopic measurement techniques applied to various samples.

The program also included guided excursions with our students, allowing participants to explore the beauties of our region. We visited Hradec Králové, Kuks, the Zoo in Dvůr Králové nad Labem, Kutná Hora, and, of course, Prague. These excursions provided our dear visitors with historical and cultural insights and the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the beauties of the Czech landscape.
