Ph.D. summit – course for incoming doctoral students

Date of Event: 10/18/2021–10/20/2021, Place: Wellness Hotel Říčky

In the term 18.10.-20.10.2021 UHK organizes a course for Ph.D. students, where they will be introduced in several blocks certain topics crucial for their research and study.

The course is intended for all incoming Ph.D. students (in Czech and English study programs) at UHK (or current Ph.D. students in case of interest), both in full-time and combined form. The course is conducted completely in English.

  • The course will provide the basic information for Ph.D. studies at UHK, which will be followed by the work of supervisors and guarantors of individual Ph.D. programs.
  • Best practice and success stories will be shared as part of the course.
  • It also includes meeting of Ph.D. students with guarantors of Ph.D. programs.

Are you a Ph.D. student? Do you feel sometimes a little bit lost and unsure how to continue in your study and career? Do you want to discuss your current study/career situation, needs, problems and their possible solutions? Do you want to make clear for yourself what are your study/career priorities and most urgent needs regarding your further study/career development?

We will help you to identify your short-term and long-term study/career goals and find the way how to achieve them. And most importantly, we will make you feel better because you will see that you are not alone in struggling. We know that being a Ph.D. student is a hard job and we want to help you to survive it and direct your further career in the way that suits you.

What we will do: During five hours we will create a safe, inspiring and creative space for you and other students to think about and discuss your current situation concerning your study, work and work-life
balance and the direction you like it to develop. Our aim is to make you
1. reflect where you stand and what you need,
2. identify who or what may help you to meet your needs and
3. formulate a plan for next 10months which will include steps how to reach your nearest goals.

Above that, we will share tips how to approach witting your thesis, communication with your supervisor, professional networking, applying for grants, academic mobility, time management and many more. It depends on you. What you are currently interested in.

Who we are: We are academic career experts, researchers in the field of sociology and psychology, and practitioners in the area of career support.

LECTURERS

Mgr. Kateřina Cidlinská, Ph.D.

Katerina is an alumnus of FSV UK and a researcher in the field of sociology, higher education studies and gender studies. Her research topics are working conditions in academia, academic careers, exits from academic career, gender inequalities in academia and professional identities. She founded and coordinated mentoring program for early-career researchers, presided European network of mentoring programs in academia EUMENT-NET and Czech PhD Students Association ČAD.

Mgr. Kateřina Machovcová, Ph.D.

Katerina is an alumnus of FSS MU and a researcher and lecturer in the field of psychology and higher education studies. Her research topics include working conditions in academia, academic careers, academic identities, leadership and followership in academia and work-life balance. She worked as a lecturer of professional and career development.
Profil

Mgr. Barbora Kubátová

In 2014, Barbora Kubátová obtained a master’s degree in Cultural History. After graduating she worked as a librarian and a proofreader. Today, she is employed at the University of Hradec Králové as a Specialist in Electronic Information Sources. Her job is to mediate the purchase of scientific databases and to teach students how to work with these digital resources. She is currently also completing her Ph.D. studies at the University of Pardubice.

Mgr. Zuzana Dvořáková

Zuzana Dvořáková has a master’s degree in Library and Information Science at Charles University. During her studies she worked in lending department in CZU Library in Prague. Now she works in the University Library UHK and she is interested in citation databases and bibliometrics.

PhDr. Václav Štětka, Ph.D.

Václav Štětka is Senior Lecturer in Communication and Media Studies at the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, Loughborough University (UK). Having started his academic career at Masaryk University in Brno, he worked as Research Fellow at the University of Oxford between 2009-2013, and then as leader of the Political Communication Research Group at Charles University in Prague until 2015. His current research interests encompass the role of social media in political communication, mediated populism, polarization and media freedom in Central and Eastern Europe.

doc. Mgr. Karel Kouba, Ph.D., M.A.

Karel Kouba is associate professor of political science at the University of Hradec Králové, Czech Republic. He graduated from Miami University (M.A.) and Palacký University in Olomouc (Ph.D.). His research focuses on voting behavior, electoral institutions, comparative politics and higher education policy of Latin American and European post-communist countries. He served as Vice Rector for International Affairs of the University of Hradec Králové and as Vice Chair of the review panel of political science grants at the Czech Science Foundation (GA ČR). He is a fan of Ute Lemper and Andreas Scholl. He has published articles in leading political science and education research journals, such as European Political Science Review, Public Choice, Electoral Studies, Higher Education, Environmental Politics, Government and Opposition, Comparative European Politics or Democratization.

Bc. Lenka Badinská

Almost 20 years in commercial/industry sphere, specializing mainly in coordination, organisational and marketing activities. In the field of education since 2017, being involved in various matters within internationalization. Among others participating on forming and implementing of university strategy of internationalization, coordinating central development projects dedicated to international activities, organizing events at the UHK with regards to internationalization, promoting university abroad, negotiating with partners abroad, a member of advisory network to DZS (the Czech National Agency for Education and Research).
 

Ing. Radka Pittnerová

Radka Pittnerova has worked in the area of international research collaboration since 2002. Apart from consulting topics related to project writing, management and finances, she has focused her professional interest, including doctoral studies, on HR in research. She has been a coordinator or a partner of several projects financed both from national and EU resources. She consults and teaches for several universities across the country.

Mgr. Kamila Etchegoyen Rosolová, Ph.D.

Kamila Etchegoyen Rosolova, Ph.D. is Head of the Department of Language Studies housed within the Czech Language Institute, Czech Academy of Sciences. With an advanced degree in Educational Policy from Michigan State University, she has had a long-standing interest in teaching and learning, and more specifically in teaching and learning research writing at the doctoral level. She joined the Department of Language Studies in 2011 as Head of the Center for Academic Writing. Since then she has developed and taught blended learning courses in research writing, guided many authors aspiring to publish their research, and delivered workshops on writing for publication to researchers and doctoral students of diverse disciplinary backgrounds.

Ing. Pavla Hubálková, Ph.D.

She has been the Science Journalist at Charles University since March 2020. She has also published in a number of media (Hospodářské noviny, Hrot, Vědavýzkum.cz, Universitas). She graduated in clinical biochemistry at VSČHT and obtained her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at 3rd Faculty of Medicine at Charles University. She spent one academic year (2018/2019) as a Fulbright Visiting Student Researcher at Northwestern University in Chicago, where she did research in neuroscience and also focused on Science Communication. She has a long-term interest in science communication and public outreach - she (has) volunteered for a number of organizations such as Czexpats in Science (until now), Chicago women in STEM, Loono, or Science Cafe. She also interned at the science editorial offices of Czech Television and Czech Radio.

Ing. Lenka Karalová

Lenka is a graduate of the Faculty of Informatics and Management of UHK. She works at the Strategic Project Department of our University as a Specialist for Science and Research. She is the manager of the UHK's Internal grant agency.

 

ACCOMMODATION

The venue is Wellness Hotel Říčky, where accommodation for 2 nights with full board is arranged. Bus transport for all participants is also ensured.
