Statement of the Rector of the University of Hradec Králové, Kamil Kuča, in connection with the tragic events at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University on December 21, 2023
Dear colleagues,
today, with horror and sorrow, we witnessed an unprecedented and condemnable attack on members of the Czech academic community, specifically at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in Prague. In our thoughts, we extend our wishes for a quick recovery to the family members and loved ones of the victims and the injured. The wounds on the bodies and souls of all involved, as well as on the soul of Czech universities, will take a very long time to heal, and perhaps they will never fully heal. That is why we stand firmly beside Charles University and are ready to assist if needed. Additionally, tomorrow, black flags will be hung on the buildings of the University of Hradec Králové as a token of our grief after the tragic event in Prague. In front of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Hradec Králové, our students have created an improvised memorial site where solidarity can be expressed by lighting a candle.
The leadership of the University of Hradec Králové is currently in contact with security forces and is discussing the present situation. Based on the information available so far regarding the incident, there is currently no reason to implement any extraordinary measures, such as restricting the operation of UHK buildings.
Ladies and gentlemen, friends, unfortunately, we do not enter the Christmas time on a positive note at all. Therefore, let us dedicate our thoughts to all those affected in these moments, and let us be kind and mutually supportive.
Sincerely and with best wishes,
Kamil Kuča
