Sustainability is not just a word, but a commitment

UHK is heading toward a more responsible future with its Sustainable Development Strategy 2030. On the occasion of International Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22 to raise awareness about the need to protect our planet, the University of Hradec Králové reaffirms its commitment to sustainability.
The Sustainable Development Strategy 2030, adopted by the university at the end of last year, presents a long-term vision and concrete steps that UHK will take in the areas of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. The strategy is aligned with the global UN Sustainable Development Goals and also reflects the responsibility of universities in education, research, and social engagement.
We want to be an institution that leads by example. We see sustainability as a cross-cutting issue that affects the entire university – from building management to teaching and student activities.
This year, the university is planning several activities to support the implementation of the strategy. In the second half of the year, UHK will participate in the European Sustainable Development Week, launch new academic programs and courses focused on sustainability, and launch a waste awareness campaign in response to this year’s global Earth Day theme, “Planet vs. Plastics”, which emphasizes the impact of plastic pollution. UHK will also focus on energy assessments of campus buildings to reduce energy consumption and contribute to climate responsibility.
In 2022, UHK introduced the new label Sustainable UHK, which now unites all sustainable activities across the university.
In parallel, the university is launching an updated website dedicated to sustainability. The academic community and the general public will be able to learn more about the strategy, planned initiatives, progress made, and how they can get involved. The new website section will also offer inspiration on how individuals can contribute to a more sustainable future – at school, at work, and in everyday life.
Why do we celebrate Earth Day?
International Mother Earth Day was first proclaimed by the United Nations in 2009. Every year, it encourages individuals, communities, and institutions to take action to protect the planet. The 2025 global theme, “Planet vs. Plastics”, highlights the impact of plastic pollution and calls for its reduction.
How is UHK celebrating Earth Day?
Our students from ESN HK, along with other local organizations such as Rotaract HK and Trash Hero HK, and with support from the City of Hradec Králové, are organizing a community cleanup around the Na Soutoku university campus, Mileta intersection, and the University Hospital HK.
Your hands can help reverse the impact of pollution and show love for our beautiful planet.
Join us for a community cleanup in honor of Earth Day! Gloves, trash bags, and drinking water will be provided.
