Tree Planting in the UHK Campus
Date of Event: 11/09/2023 15:00–16:00
Václav Havel Square, which is the center of the "Na Soutoku" campus, is known for its beautiful fountain and pleasant grassy areas that provide a place to sit and relax. However, despite this place being popular for gatherings and relaxation, in the warm months, it can be uncomfortably hot here due to insufficient shade and the high thermal reflectivity of the surrounding buildings.
Finally, we can announce the planned tree planting, which aims to enhance this central location and make it an even more pleasant place for all visitors.
-
Shade and Cooling: Various tree species suitable for these conditions will be planted to provide the necessary shade over time. The combination with the central fountain should significantly contribute to improving the microclimate of the entire square.
-
Increase in Species Diversity: Trees are carefully selected to enhance species diversity and contribute to the creation of a small arboretum. They will be available not only to students (e.g., for educational purposes) but also to the public.
-
Informational Plaques and QR Codes: Informational plaques with important details and QR codes will be placed near each tree, allowing easy access to further information about it.
This project is supported by the "Sázej stromy.cz" program of the O2 Foundation, which is dedicated to environmental conservation and the support of sustainable projects. The project has been consulted with a dendrologist.
The tree planting is scheduled for Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Václav Havel Square (in case of unfavorable weather, it will be postponed to November 16, 2023).
With this step, the Faculty of Science UHK aims not only to improve the ambience for students and visitors but also to demonstrate our commitment to caring for our city and the environment. Additionally, given the proximity of other parks and grassy areas, we will contribute to the expansion of biodiversity in the entire campus vicinity.
We thank all those who participated in the voting for the winning community mini-project within the Sustainable UHK initiative!
