Amalgamation of municipalities and local democracy

Project Description

The project aims to answer the question of how does political accountability work in municipalities with a different experience of amalgamation and different size, and how this relationship affects political trust at different levels of governance. The project focuses mainly on how contextual characteristics affect electoral behaviour, and the role of evaluation of the performance of local politicians. The role of local identity and specific political conditions of municipalities (referenda, competitiveness of elections) are also included in the research for a better understanding of possible mechanisms. Research questions will be answered by the application of quantitative statistical methods on data gathered in the exit-poll survey conducted as part of the project.
