Summer School of Algebraic Geometry
Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences UHK organized Summer School of Algebraic Geometry from 3th August to 2nd September 2018, attended by thirty foreign students within the UHK International Mobility Program. The whole school follows the Spring School of Differential Geometry and Topology, held at the FoS UHK in May 2018.
"We chose algebraic geometry because it is a neglected part of mathematics at many universities", explains the main topic Dr. Oleksii Kotov, organizer and lecturer at the summer school who specialises in this discipline and who is a member of scientific team of mathematicians focusing on geometry at the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Science UHK.
Algebraic geometry is used in many sciences and disciplines: "For example in string theory describing our universe or in coding," adds Dr. Anton Galaev, another organizer of the course, and adds that we are surrounded by this mathematical discipline every day without even realizing it: "The process of simple withdrawing from an ATM or logging into an e-mail account or social network we do almost daily is based on algebraic geometry methods. "
In total, 32 students from the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kiev and students of the Moscow University of Economics from the campus in Nizhny Novgorod are participating. The course was designed in such a way that the subject is comprehensible to all their levels of education. The special Friday seminars aimed at students of PhD. programmes who presented their theses and thus inspired their younger colleagues in their future research.
"We hope to establish a new tradition at our faculty that will contribute to the mathematical education of the new generation of young scientists from all over the world," concluded the two organizers.
