2nd Czech-American Workshop on Czech History
Date of Event: 04/18/2024 14:00
The first mutual contacts between Bohemia and the world of English culture can be traced back to the later Middle Ages and are associated with the person of Anne of Bohemia along with close ties between John Wyclif and Jan Hus, as well as Lollards with Hussites. Nevertheless, it was William Shakespeare who put Bohemia on the coastline in The Winter’s Tale, and since then, the part of Central Europe currently defined as the Czech Republic has remained the subject of intermittent interest among the English-speaking world, including historians. As it seems, this interest has successfully crossed the Atlantic with the settlers, and today, the history of Bohemia, Moravia, Czechoslovakia as well as Czechia, or historical variations thereof, represents a small but important niche in US scholarship, with various scholars applying a wide range of methods to even broader spectrum of themes and topics.
Our workshop aims to continue a fairly recent tradition that started only in 2022 by setting up an online meeting of scholars interested in the history of the region, its politics, institutions, society and culture and provide them with an opportunity to discuss their recent work in a friendly, rather informal environment of an online debate. No specific period of history is preferred, works in progress, hypotheses, as well as preliminary conclusions are welcome! The purpose of the workshop is to provide a forum and platform for scholarly exchange among Czech and American historians.
