Mgr. Nina Fárová, PhD, Department of Sociology, won prestigious Fulbright-Masaryk Scholarship. Dr. Fárová is going to spend the next academic year at the Science, Technology and Society Hub at San Francisco State University. Her research area is connected with the gender division of labor and the influence of modern technologies in households.
It was not an easy task to get the scholarship. “First, I had to find a higher education institution in the USA that would be suitable for my planned research and a contact person who would be a mentor for me. Which I eventually found, but that was not all, I had to create a research project explaining what I intend to study and, of course, how my work would contribute to Czech-American research cooperation in the future. Last but not least, I had to fulfill all conditions of Fulbright-Masaryk Scholarship, which means I had to prove my community activities that would lead to the cultivation of public space.” said Dr. Nina Fárová from the Department of Sociology.
As the result of her work is the success of gaining the scholarship. Nina Fárová should be able to travel to the United States in September.
“I am going to study how the modern “smart” technologies affect the gender division of labor in a household, taking care of the children or couples themselves. I am going to lead many research interviews with people living in those smart homes but also with the developers of modern technologies right in Silicon Valley. At the same time, I am going to learn how to approach such a topic that is closely related to gender and modern technologies. In the Czech academic environment, it has not been paid too much attention yet,” adds Dr. Fárová.
Nina Fárová focuses on gender issues, especially from the perspective of sociology and anthropology. She has been studying the topic of men and masculinities in education and her other research focus is the relationship between gender, science and technology. Dr. Fárová focuses mainly on qualitative research. She has been working as a researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, NKC Gender & Science department for many years now. She is also a member of the Gender Expert Chamber of the Czech Republic and the Working Group for Men and Equality of Women and Men.
